Interstellar, which was premiered in theaters in 2014, is a great movie that depicts what challenges will humanity have to income when we tried to leave our planet Earth. Many scientists rated the film as “almost realistic”. However, some details in the film were pretty nonsense, to say…
What happened to the other nine astronauts ?
In Interstellar, humans are trying to leave Earth in the near future, as the oxygen level on Earth has been decreasing and most plants can’t even grow, except corn. A chance came by when NASA observed twelve planets in a “Goldilocks zone” inside a wormhole – a zone where condition is ideal for water and thus, life to exist. Twelve astronauts with no ties behind were sent on a one-way mission to explore the twelve planets, a part of the Lazarus project. However, Lazarus was only partially successful when three of the twelve astronauts, comprised of Hugh Mann, Wolf Edmunds and Laura Miller, relayed back the signal that their planet is habitable. But the reality is way more different. Miller’s planet is nothing but columns of tsunamis that killed her only a few hours after touchdown, Mann faked the signal to be rescued and that his planet was also nothing. He even tried to maroon his rescue crew on the planet, but his plan backfired when he died approaching the rescue crew’s space station. The third and final planet, Edmunds’ is the only habitable one, with rocky surface and breathable air. Edmunds couldn’t save himself when a landslide crushed his Lazarus station and severed the power, cutting off ECLSS equipment and trapping him in his unpowered hibernation pod, killing him. He helped saved the whole humanity, however.
But what about the other nine astronauts ? After all, NASA didn’t receive a single ping of signal from them and their profile now described them as “MIA, presumed deceased”.
